A GENTLE CREATURE by Sergei Loznitsa starts shooting

Sergei Loznitsa has begun the shooting of A GENTLE CREATURE. Scheduled to last 5 weeks, the shooting of A GENTLE CREATURE will take place in and around the city of Daugavpils (Eastern Latvia). The work is expected to be premiering in 2017.

Inspired by Dostoyevsky’s short story, Sergei Loznitsa leads us into the land of crime without punishment – a journey into the abyss from the director of IN THE FOG and MAIDAN.

“This is a purely fictional story; I have made it up from the beginning to the end. I was inspired by a short story by Dostoevsky, and which Dostoevsky himself referred to as a «fantastic story». It is a story of a relationship between a torturer and his victim, narrated by the torturer. In my fantasy, the victim retains her role of a victim, but the torturer is not personified by one single character, but acquires a rather different shape – the sadistic qualities are distributed among a multitude of characters, and the physical space, in which the victim exists, is itself menacing and aggressive.” – says Sergei Loznitsa.

The cast features actors from Russia, Latvia, and Romania as well as a large number of non professionals, which have been patiently and carefully selected since months, as it is customary for Sergei Loznitsa’s films. Vasilina Makovtseva will play the role of “The Victim” with Valeriu Andriuta, Sergei Kolesov, Lia Akhedzhakova and Dimitry Bykovsky by her side, along with a large number of prestigious actors.
