In the Valley of Time
Luxury watches – made in Germany
The “Prix Spezial“ by the Salons de la Haute Horlogerie, Geneva, is the „Oscar‟ of the high art of watchmaking. In autumn 2004, it was awarded to the managing director of Lange & Söhne. Thereby the Geneva jury honoured not only his company but the horology manufactures of Glashuette which, in the deepest Eastern German province, have made an amazing achievment: The brand of Glashuette is back at the top of luxury watches.
The horology manufactures look back on a turbulent history: When founded in the mid-19th century, they started producing exclusive pocket watches. Later they switched to wristwatches and, finally, to mass production of simple models when the socialist East German government took over control. Only after the fall of the Berlin Wall, traditional manufactures like Lange & Söhne and Glashütte Original could concentrate again on producing luxury watches – and started an unequalled success story “made in Germany”. Today, Glashuette‟s horologists build the technically most advanced and most expensive models world-wide: watches that are highly sophisticated and complex, to the limits of what is mechanically possible, and have the value of a small car. These watches are made for perpetuity and with a life-long guarantee which seems like a perfect anachronism in today‟s fast-moving time.
This is the success story of the Glashuette watchmakers from the Saxon province to the top level of luxury products – side by side with their colleagues from Cartier and Rolex.
