When we were children
What was it like to grow up behind the Berlin Wall?
Childhood is an age of energy. Every child has an untamable will to live. But childhood is also a time of change, and of impressions that, once made, can never be undone. We realize what fear is, we live dreams and nightmares as vividly as our most colorful fantasies. We will spend the rest of our lives based on the experiences we have as children, whether we realize it or not. How, then, was it to grow up in a socialist country, to grow up “behind the Wall”? Who were these children’s heroes, and who their role models? This film tells the story of childhoods in East Germany, from 1949 to 1989. The subjects hail from all walks of life, across all generations that grew up “behind the Wall”. Their stories always end in the now, to help us realize which of their childhood experiences changed them the most and have the strongest implications for them today. Pedagogues explain the reasoning behind East German-style education inevident to the children themselves.
